Ningbo, in Zhejiang province, has opened its first zero-waste cultural park, transforming discarded materials into interactive art while highlighting the city's achievements in sustainable urban development.

Opened on Aug 15 at Sunhu Park in Jiangbei district, the park is the first of its kind in the city. Rather than eliminating all waste, the zero-waste approach focuses on reducing environmental impact through recycling, reusing, and resource management. At Sunhu Park, abstract sustainability concepts are brought to life in ways visitors can see, touch, and engage with.

The park's installations are entirely built from repurposed materials: Walls crafted from recycled bricks and tiles, playgrounds made from old tires, metal scraps turned into creative sculptures, and wooden carvings shaped into animals. Even benches and tables are made from reused barrels. Each feature embodies the principles of reduction, resourcefulness, and safety, turning everyday waste into functional art.

Since Ningbo launched its zero-waste city initiative in 2020, the city has made significant strides in waste reduction and resource recycling. The park, developed over two years, integrates learning, recreation, and exhibition functions to engage residents of all ages.

According to an official from the Jiangbei branch of Ningbo municipal bureau of ecology and environment, the park not only shows Ningbo's progress but is also a "zero-waste classroom", offering visitors hands-on experiences of green living. By blending fun, education, and design, it encourages the public to understand and embrace sustainable practices in daily life.
