The 2025 Pan'an Village Volleyball Association gas volleyball competition kicked off in Pan'an county, Jinhua, Zhejiang province, on the night of July 1, reigniting a summer sporting spectacle.

As a leisurely alternative to competitive volleyball, the gas version of the sport, also known as balloon volleyball or light volleyball, is suitable for all ages and skill levels.

Last year's four-month competition drew 217 teams, over 2,000 athletes, and 100,000 spectators, effectively converting its widespread appeal into a boon for the local economy.

This year, the ongoing competition is attracting participants from all walks of life, and all gas volleyball enthusiasts over the age of 18 are eligible to sign up. It features grassroots charm with dialect commentary, prizes like poultry and livestock, and folk-culture shows performed by farmers.

The competition combines markets, culture, and tourism. Traditional Wuju Opera and folk custom performances enliven intervals while a bustling market at the venue spotlights agricultural products and crafts from Pan'an county and across China, helping farmers expand their sales channels.

Shang Yang, deputy head of Pan'an county, said during his opening speech, "The event transcends sport. It embodies community vibrancy, cultural heritage, and wellness values." He announced plans to build a gas volleyball-themed park, merging professional venues with public fitness facilities.
