The sweet-tart Chinese bayberry (Chinese: 杨梅) is one of the most popular fruits in southern China.

Do foreigners like the fruit? What it’s like for the foreigners to eat Chinese bayberries for the first time? For foreigners who have lived in Wenzhou for a long time, they aren’t ignorant to talk about this fruit.

Our Internet-celebrity Dr. Brett, who is from South Africa and has lived in Wenzhou for 8 years,  together with his friends went to Ouhai Chashan to buy 2.5 kilograms of Yangmei. After haggling with the store owners, they got a special discounted price.

They set up a small mystery box and placed Yangmei in it, then invited some new- international friends to taste the Yangmei with eyes closed.

Ashton, an international friend from Africa, asked what it is as he saw the Yangmei for the first time. After taking a bite, he said it was so delicious. Later, they met Rishabh. He said that Yangmei was a bit bitter but also a bit sweet after he tasted one.

Jonas from Germany accidentally ate a sour Yangmei and he was curious about the seed.

If you are new to Zhejiang, you must try this fruit. It is likely for you to get surprised by the amazing tastes of this reddish, juicy fruit with a slightly acidic flavor.

The fruit was originated in Yuyao, Zhejiang Province. In 1973, the Hemudu Archaeological Site of the Neolithic Age was discovered in Yuyao, where the pollen of the Myrica L.was found, indicating that the fruit grew in the area more than 7,000 years ago.
