In response to China's aging population, Jinhua in Zhejiang province is establishing itself as a leading manufacturer of products for the elderly. From electric wheelchairs to multi-functional nursing beds and ergonomic knee protectors, these "made in Jinhua" innovations are transforming the silver economy.
Zhejiang Kapai Wood Industry Co, which previously specialized in high-end home customization, has shifted its focus to producing elderly-friendly furniture. "This is both market-driven and a strategic choice," said Executive Director Xu Faqian. Since entering this sector in 2021, elderly-friendly products now contribute about 30 percent to the company's revenue.
In September, Jinhua issued its Action Plan for Silver Economy Development and Elderly Welfare (2025-2027), emphasizing the expansion of the elderly care product industry. The initiative encourages companies to develop functional clothing, adaptive home appliances, and service robots specifically designed for seniors.
At the forefront of innovation, Enjoycare Technology (Zhejiang) Co is developing a smart electric wheelchair equipped with advanced features, including obstacle detection, navigation, and an ergonomic design.
The company, exporting to over 70 countries, reported sales of 38 million yuan ($5.33 million) in the first eight months this year, with 60 percent coming from international markets.
Xu Xiong, deputy general manager, said that the company participates in international exhibitions and enhances product performance through technological innovation to expand market share.
Liu Zhihao, chairman of Zhejiang Astrawheel Technology Co, suggested deepening industry-education integration, developing a rehabilitation equipment industrial park, and establishing key laboratories for product testing and development, to further establish Jinhua as a "silver manufacturing" hub.
