Deqing county in Huzhou, East China's Zhejiang province is emerging as a key player in the global geospatial industry, driven by technological innovation and international cooperation.

The county, home to the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Knowledge and Innovation Center, is setting new benchmarks for the sector.

A significant milestone was reached with the release on July 20 of the Mogan Xuanyan 1.5 geospatial model — a software-based AI system, trained on vast geospatial datasets to perform high-efficiency 3D modeling and spatial analysis. Developed by the Moganshan Geospatial Information Laboratory, this model enables high-quality 3D reconstructions with minimal input.

Deqing is also advancing the low-altitude economy by developing real-time 3D mapping for urban air traffic. The initiative supports safe and efficient drone navigation and has been tested in places like Deqing and Hangzhou.

Deqing county's geospatial industry, comprising over 400 companies, forms a comprehensive chain valued at nearly 10 billion yuan ($1.39 billion). Local government policies have been pivotal, fostering projects in water ecology and meteorological warnings.

Internationally, Deqing is expanding its reach. In July 2025, Saudi Arabia's Meter Company joined forces with local companies to explore the Middle Eastern market. Deqing's firms plan to participate in global events like Germany's INTERGEO 2025.

With the UN center's establishment in 2022, Deqing's international collaborations have accelerated. The county hosted the first UN Geospatial Information Week in 2024, and plans are for it to continue to share its sustainable development practices globally.
