Yiwu serves up sweet brown sugar

Other than a paradise for traders from all over the world, Yiwu in East China's Zhejiang province is also known for its brown sugar, the production of which dates back four centuries. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2014.


Brown sugar production in Yiwu requires nine successive pots which guarantee the purity of the sugar. The sugar is a light yellow color with a little cyan and tastes spongy and sweet. Almost everyone in Yiwu has fond memories of the brown sugar.

Yiwu's Xiantian village is one of the city's brown sugar producing areas and the village set up a brown sugar production base in 2019. Sun Wenyi, Party chief of Xiantian village, said that the production base within one year manufactures more than 50 tons of brown sugar during the sugarcane harvest season and develops various brown sugar products with the annual revenue reaching 5 million yuan ($685,862).
