International Tea Expo in Hangzhou Turns New Page

From May 15 through 19th, 2019, Hangzhou hosted the 3rd China International Tea Expo, which attracted tens of thousands of people to attend. The expo presented the theme of “tea and world for shared development”. The expo venue measured about 70,000 square meters and provided 3,125 standard booths. Among the exhibitors were 176 key buyers from 27 countries and regions. Also held during the exposition were a string of parallel events such as forums, summits, dialogues and field studies.

The country’s leading tea producer whose productivity averages 7,550 yuan per  (15  equal one hectare), Zhejiang presented 241 exhibitors using 453 exhibition booths. It was the biggest number of exhibitors from Zhejiang over the last three expos. They displayed best quality tea products, which were essentially winners of various tea competitions at different levels.

Moreover, the province had never seen so many tea products presented by its tea producers. The tea products varied in categories: green tea, yellow tea, red tea, black tea, white tea, as well as tea utensils and tea delicacies. At the booths, the exhibitors also organized various shows and performances. Almost each booth served as a tiny teahouse.

One outstanding feature of the expo was the large space offered free for exhibitors from eight poverty-stricken regions in remote mountains across the country. Altogether, eighty-two tea businesses from fifty-eight counties of fourteen provinces displayed their products in this special space. One tea product from Guangyuan, Sichuan Province meant a lot to tea farmers in Anji in northern Zhejiang. In April 2018, 20 tea farmers in Huangdu, a village in Anji, offered to donate 15 million tea saplings to poverty-stricken farmers in other provinces. Four counties in three provinces were picked for sharing the 15 million tea saplings. Part of the 15 million arrived in Qingcuan, a county in Guangyuan City. With a history of 3,000 years in tea production, Guangyuan has been working with Zhejiang in boosting its tea production since 1996. The tea saplings for poverty-stricken areas in Guangyuan are only a small part of the assistance offered by Zhejiang in its continuous effort. Now Guangyuan not only operates a sales network across the country but also exports tea products to many countries across the world.

At the expo, Zhejiang presented a range of new products which reflected the efforts and progress the province’s tea industry has made over years. And some new tea products caught the eye of visitors. Shaoxing, a city in eastern Zhejiang, has 32 businesses present at the expo. One novel tea product was Bamboo Tea, a black tea product made through a complicated process. It is a product by Jinghong Tea Company based in Shengzhou. After black tealeaves are made, they are put into a short hollow bamboo piece. The bamboo is then wrapped up in tin foil and baked. That’s why it is called Bamboo Tea. The tea oozes the fragrances of tea and bamboo. In 2018, the company sold 650 kilograms of the tea and this year it hopes to sell 2,500 kilograms.

Another popular tea product at the expo was Osmanthus Teabags. It is made by a teahouse also in Shengzhou. It had taken the teahouse two years to finalize the formula. Osmanthus flowers used in the teabags are from forests in Guangxi and Yunnan in the southwest of China. Osmanthus flowers and tealeaves are wrapped up in a triangular bag made of corn fibers and sealed off with a supersonic technology. The teahouse has developed a series of osmanthus tea.

In fact, Shaoxing showed itself as a leader in developing new tea products. Another major breakthrough in their R & D endeavors is yellow tea, launched at the expo.
