1. U.S. President Joe Biden signs $1-trillion infrastructure bill

 

U.S. President Joe Biden has signed his $1-trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill into law on Monday. He thanked members of Congress for passing the bill, including the 19 Senate Republicans and 13 House Republicans who voted for the legislation.

 

The bill includes $550 billion in new funds, and it is expected to fund nationwide infrastructure improvements, including repairs and upgrades to roads, bridges, and other major areas of infrastructure, such as wastewater systems, including a $15 billion investment in the replacement of lead pipes, and electrical grids. 

 

2. EU foreign ministers agree on new sanctions against Belarus

 

Foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) have agreed on new sanctions against Belarus over the migrant crisis, the bloc's top diplomat Josep Borrell said on Monday.

 

Addressing a press conference after the ministers' meeting, he said the new set of sanctions had been "politically adopted" and "will be finalized in the coming days." The sanctions will affect "quite an important number" of individuals and entities, he added.

 

3. Roundup: Iran, Turkey agree to develop "cooperation roadmap", vow to boost all-out ties


Iranian foreign minister and his visiting Turkish counterpart on Monday agreed on designing a long-term "cooperation roadmap" and vowed to further comprehensive ties.

 

At the joint press conference held in the capital Tehran, the Iranian Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that during the Monday talks, both sides agreed to draw up a new roadmap for long-term cooperation between Tehran and Ankara.

 

4. UK terror threat level raised to "severe" following Liverpool explosion

 

Britain's terror threat level has been upgraded from "substantial" to "severe" following an explosion outside a Liverpool hospital that had been declared a terrorist incident on Monday.


The upgrade, confirmed by British Home Secretary Priti Patel, means further attacks are judged to be "highly likely."



5. Chinese navy fleet returns from Gulf of Aden escort missions

 

Chinese naval fleet Monday returned to a military port in Zhoushan, east China's Zhejiang Province, after concluding escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and the waters off Somalia.

 

The 38th naval escort fleet, comprised of missile destroyer Nanjing, missile frigate Yangzhou, and supply ship Gaoyouhu, weighed anchor on May 15 at a military port in Zhoushan.

 

6. Xi stresses mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, win-win cooperation in China-U.S. relations

 

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday highlighted mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation as three principles in developing China-U.S. relations in the new era.

 

Xi made the remarks in a virtual meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden.

 

Xi called on the two countries to respect each other's social systems and development paths, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and respect each other's right to development.

 

7. Xi Jinping sends congratulatory letter to China-Africa People's Forum

 

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday sent a congratulatory letter to the sixth China-Africa People's Forum held in Beijing.

 

The world today is an era of great development and great changes, Xi stressed. Facing new opportunities and challenges, China and Africa, more than ever, need to uphold and advocate peace, development, equity, justice, democracy and freedom, which are the common values of humanity, enhance solidarity and cooperation, jointly promote prosperity and development, and jointly build a community with a shared future for mankind, he said.

9. Hong Kong's new museum of visual culture opens with free admission

 

Hong Kong's M+ museum, billed as Asia's premier art institution, has opened its doors to the public and is offering free admission for the first year.

 

Its opening displays include six thematic exhibitions featuring visual artworks, moving images, design objects, architectural projects, and archival items from M+ Collections, which the museum has been building since 2012. 

 

Some 1,500 works from 30 countries and regions worldwide are presented within the 17,000-square-meter exhibition space – the biggest in Hong Kong.

 

10. Snowmaking underway for the start of 2022 Olympics

 

Snow-making for Alpine skiing events at the 2022 Winter Olympics started on Monday in Beijing's Yanqing district and is expected to be completed by mid-January, in time for the arrival of the world's top winter athletes.
