1. Chinese mainland records 89 confirmed COVID-19 cases


The Chinese mainland recorded 89 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on Sunday, with 65 linked to local transmissions and 24 from overseas, data from the National Health Commission (NHC) showed on Monday.


In addition, 46 new asymptomatic cases were recorded, while 456 asymptomatic patients remain under medical observation. 

Confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland now total 97,823, with the death toll unchanged at 4,636.


The latest tally of confirmed cases in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan region is as follows:


Hong Kong: 12,368 (12,036 recoveries, 213 deaths)

Macao: 77 (75 recoveries)

Taiwan: 16,442 (13,742 recoveries, 847 deaths)


2. 19th CPC Central Committee holds sixth plenary session


The 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) started its sixth plenary session in Beijing on Monday. 


Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, delivered a work report on behalf of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and made explanations on a draft resolution on the major achievements and historical experience of the CPC's 100 years of endeavors. 


3. Chinese ambassador Qin Gang encourages U.S. students who are learning Chinese


Chinese ambassador to the U.S. Qin Gang held a virtual meeting with the winners of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition on Saturday.


This year's global champion is Li Xiaoyu, a postgraduate student at Portland State University in the U.S. state of Oregon. Ambassador Qin encouraged the students to continue the learning and to become cultural ambassadors despite current challenges in U.S.-China relations. 


Many students said that they are committed to bridging the cultural gap and reducing xenophobia caused by a lack of understanding. Many also said that studying Chinese has helped them learn more about Chinese people and culture.


4. E-games championship gives a sporting buzz


It is not too late to update your knowledge about EDG. On Saturday night, a five-person team of the Chinese e-sports club, with the full name EDward Gaming, won the 2021 League of Legends (LoL) World Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland.


The hashtag #EDG is champion# had attracted 209 million viewers by Sunday morning, with the number still rising. The live-streaming of the championship had more than 200 million viewers on two major domestic smartphone apps, and the number was boosted by viewers on other channels.

The president's approval rating has kept declining for weeks now since the Delta variant reversed progress on the COVID-19 pandemic and his withdrawal from Afghanistan drew bipartisan rebuke.


The poll found that 46 percent of those surveyed believe Biden is doing a worse job as president than expected. Republicans hold a clear lead on the congressional ballot, according to the poll. 


7. Global COVID-19 cases near 250 million as Delta surge eases


Worldwide cases due to COVID-19 were approaching 250 million on Sunday as the surge from the Delta variant eases and relatively normal trade and tourism activities resume, although some countries in eastern Europe are experiencing record outbreaks.


Over the last three months, the daily average number of cases has fallen by 36 percent, according to a Reuters analysis.


8. CIIE facilitates global access to the huge Chinese market


The ongoing 4th China International Import Expo (CIIE) is helping boost other countries' exports to the Chinese market, at a time when the world is still struggling to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and gain a stream in the economic recovery.


Thailand, whose pillar sector tourism has tumbled after almost two years of the pandemic, sees its exports to China a bright spot amid the economic gloom. 


Thailand's exports to China rose by 33.2 percent in the first nine months of this year, led by shipments of agricultural products, which surged by a whopping 56.3 percent year on year, according to China's General Administration of Customs.


9. Sharp jump in the number of people facing famine: UN


The UN's food agency said on Monday the number of people on the edge of famine in 43 countries had risen to 45 million, as acute hunger spikes around the world.


The jump from 42 million people earlier in the year was largely down to a food security assessment that found another 3 million people facing famine in Afghanistan, the World Food Program (WFP) said.
