1. The 4th China International Import Expo (CIIE) is to take place in Shanghai, China from November 5 to November 10

 

The Expo has become a platform for international sourcing, investment promotion, cultural exchanges, and open cooperation. This year, the total exhibition area of the corporate exhibition exceeds that of the previous one, and the rate of return exhibitions of the world's top 500 and leading industry enterprises exceeds 80%, showing that China is still regarded as the most important consumer market.


Greenness and low-carbonness are one of the major attractions at Expo with new technologies such as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and plans for a "zero-carbon factory" being showcased. The medical exhibition area will feature more new products and technologies than in the previous three years. This year's Expo will also display the achievements of cities’ digital transformation. Digital RMB payments will be fully covered in the exhibition scenario, enabling a one-stop digital RMB consumption experience.


According to Sun Chenghai, the deputy director of China International Import Expo Bureau, this year’s Expo will welcome a total of 58 countries and 3 international organizations participating in the National Exhibition, and nearly 3,000 exhibitors from 127 countries and regions striking their pose at the Enterprise Exhibition with the number of countries and enterprises exceeding that of the previous Expo.

 

2. Chinese mainland records 104 confirmed COVID-19 cases


The Chinese mainland recorded 104 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on November 2 – 87 local transmissions and 17 from overseas, data from the National Health Commission (NHC) showed on November 4. 

In addition, 31 new asymptomatic cases were recorded, while 406 asymptomatic patients remain under medical observation.

Confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland now total 97,527, with the death toll unchanged at 4,636.

The latest tally of confirmed cases in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan region is as follows:

Hong Kong: 12,352 (12,034 recoveries, 213 deaths)
Macao: 77 (75 recoveries)
Taiwan: 16,428 (13,742 recoveries, 847 deaths)


3. RCEP to take effect on January 1, 2022: MOFCOM


The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement will take effect on January 1 next year, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) announced on November 3.


As of November 2, six Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states – Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as four non-ASEAN signatory states – China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, have ratified the RCEP agreement, said MOFCOM citing a statement by the ASEAN Secretariat.


The RCEP will enter into force 60 days after ratification by at least six ASEAN states and at least three non-ASEAN states, according to an agreement, which means the effective date of the pact for the 10 countries is January 1, 2022.


Signed by 15 Asia-Pacific nations in November 2020, the RCEP will be the world's largest free trade agreement, covering almost a third of the world's population and nearly a third of the world's gross domestic product.


4. China urges developed countries to intensify efforts on climate change


A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson on November 3 urged developed countries to intensify their efforts to fulfill their commitments to developing countries on climate change, to make due contributions to climate change response and global climate governance.


Noting that developed countries are the main parties responsible for climate change and historical carbon emissions, spokesperson Wang Wenbin said it is their unshakeable moral duty and international obligation under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement to provide finance to developing countries to help with their response to climate change.

 

5. China successfully launches new remote-sensing satellites


China successfully launched two new remote-sensing satellites from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 3:43 p.m. on November 3.


The satellites, members of the Yaogan-32 family, will be used for electromagnetic environment surveys and other technical tests.

 

November 3's launch was the 394th mission of China's Long March rocket series.  


6. Political mutual trust between countries essential for global cooperation on climate change, says Al Gore


Political mutual trust between the wealthier and low-income countries is essential for global cooperation on climate change, former U.S. Vice President and environmentalist Al Gore said on November 2, urging developed countries to deliver their promises and provide more assistance to low-income countries as soon as possible.

 

Speaking to Xinhua during the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Glasgow, Scotland, Gore said every nation should be doing much more in tackling climate change.

7. Iran says to resume Vienna nuke talks on Nov. 29 

Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran's senior nuclear negotiator, said on November 3 that the Vienna nuclear talks for the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), will resume on Nov. 29.


"In a phone call with Enrique Mora, we agreed to start the negotiations aiming at the removal of unlawful and inhumane sanctions on Nov. 29 in Vienna," Bagheri Kani tweeted.

After meetings between Bagheri Kani and Mora, deputy secretary-general of the European External Action Service, in Tehran and Brussels, Iran and the European Union had agreed on the resumption of talks in November.


Iran has said the issue of lifting sanctions and the related parties' full implementation of obligations to the JCPOA will be the main agenda of the talks which has been suspended since June following a shift in Iran's administration. 

 

8. Japan PM to consider acting as foreign minister until new cabinet formed


Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on November 4 that he was considering acting as the foreign minister himself until a new cabinet was formed later this month, as the incumbent foreign minister was set to take over a key ruling party post.


Kishida has tapped Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi for the No. 2 post in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), a powerful role that includes shaping policy.


The LDP will convene an executive board meeting later on Thursday to confirm the appointment.


9. LA mayor tests positive for COVID-19 at the climate summit


Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti tested positive for COVID-19 on November 3 while attending the UN climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland, an event that has drawn world leaders and tens of thousands of other people from around the world.


His office announced a positive test result in a tweet, adding only: "He is feeling good and isolating in his hotel room. He is fully vaccinated."


10. the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia declares national state of emergency 


On November 2, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia declares a national state of emergency

 

The Ethiopian government announced on November 2, in light of the current security situation in northern Ethiopia that has deteriorated abruptly, they decided to implement a six-month nationwide state of emergency from now on.


According to the regulations, during a state of emergency, Ethiopian citizens must carry their identity cards for inspection when they go out. Security forces can conduct raids and detain suspects having connections to terrorist organizations without a warrant.
