Based on a true love story between Wang Ronghao, a nuclear bomb technician and his wife Wang Xianqin in Xianrenkeng village, Shengzhou, the original Yueju Opera Love under the Walnut Tree is created as a modern try of the traditional play.

Unlike the theme in traditional Yueju Opera which focuses mainly on the love stories between a talented man and a beautiful woman, this play takes the theme to a higher level, combining ordinary people's love with national love. The artistic adaption of the original story also makes the play more relatable and acceptable to young and old alike.

Xie Lihong, editor of Love under the Walnut Tree and the vice president of the Dramatist Association of Zhejiang Province, was deeply attracted when she first read the story. As a senior screenwriter, Xie found this story poetic, and has plenty of room for artistic creation.

"The story has a very unique perspective," Xie said. "The protagonists are ordinary men, but through them we can see the country, the world, the dedication and sacrifice."

As a representative work of modern Yueju Opera, Love under the Walnut Tree was played as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the founding of CPC in Beijing.

Also, to celebrate the 115th anniversary of the birth of Yueju Opera, Shengzhou, the birthplace of Yueju Opera, initiates the declaration of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
