Dragon Lantern Festival

冬@0.5x.jpg

The dragon is a mythical creature in Chinese culture. Unlike in the European knight stories, no one needs to save a princess from the dragon. In China, the dragon is a symbol of good luck and the protection of the villagers.

The dragon dance is celebrated during the Chinese new lunar year on the 15th day of the first month (which changes its specific date each year) and at the beginning of the spring, mostly during the mid-end of March.

The dance itself is indescribable. It starts with loud drums music, which makes your heart beat faster. After a few minutes of music, the head of the dragon starts marching, leading the benches and the men after him in the village. All the candles in the lanterns are lightened up and the benches make different shapes during the dance: a butterfly, a ship, and many more. People from different villages came to see the dragon dance. To hold the bench and keep it dancing with the rest of the benches is a really hard task, but not for the villagers who kept the dance fully in order. It was a pleasant surprise (and a bit dangerous) when the head of the dragon caught fire, in the tradition, this means that the new year will be like a fire—big and out-bursting.
