As spring flower petals open to the world, the fragrance of tea fills the warming air, its scent at the heights of bewitching allure.

With April being the optimal month to harvest its verdant leaves, on the morning of April 22 in the picturesque town of Pingshui, expats living in Shaoxing visited the breathtaking countryside in Pingshui of Shaoxing City, swapping entrepreneurial tales among steaming cups of fragrant tea, and got the chance to approach closer to China's common prosperity initiative.

The tea fields of Pingshui stretch dozens of hectares, their lush, dark green leaves dripping in wet, brilliant color, fresh and new life undulating under soft spring breezes. Their fragrance drenching all in reach, fledgling Rizhu buds beginning their journey raise their sights to the sun above, ready to reach new heights. Bright white tiles dot aged gray stone walls in a living painting of Zhejiang...

At the peak of tea’s agrestal power, the time is now to truly appreciate all it has to offer - from picking to drying, roasting to tasting… every moment one to be savored. Alice is from Russia. Her first time picking tea in Pingshui, the birthplace of “pearl tea”, saw her shoulder to shoulder with local villagers, a straw hat on her head and basket in hand.

Smiling, she marveled at a new way to welcome a new spring, before joining other friends from afar in learning the intricacies of tea drying and processing from a seasoned master of the craft. Listening with rapt interest, they then relished the chance to give it a try, tossing, massaging, and kneading leaves of green as gentle breezes carried the fragrant scent to corners unknown. Drowning in the bliss of tea’s aroma, they sought to, quite literally, take a long drink of spring, tasting its depth and breadth in a single gulp.

Among the midst of fragrant waves, Tang Shuailiang, an agricultural entrepreneur and general manager of Shaoxing Qinwang Tea Cooperative, shared stories of the interconnected destinies of common prosperity and tea - and the towering tales of wealth and well-being that lay beneath every tiny leaf.

Through its unique role as the originator of tea culture itself, China has built bridges of friendship with the world on pillars of green leaves - green turning exponentially golden as the years' progress, bringing increased wealth and prosperity to the people of Keqiao year after year.

According to the Keqiao Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 2021 saw tea fields in the region grow to a total of about 5,000 hectares, producing an output of 6,635 tons worth 463.2 million yuan, with the renowned Pingshui Rizhu variety commanding 2,200 tons and 422 million yuan, respectively - accounting for more than 90% of Keqiao’s entire tea output and production.

"Making good tea was the original aspiration," Tang remarked. "But now it’s my dream to lead each and every member of our villages to a brighter future,  a life where Rizhu is our road to common prosperity." Shaoxing’s new generation of agricultural entrepreneurs - and those like Tang Shuailiang - have not only become forces in the rural industry but “main forces” in the promotion and advancement of rural revitalization, bringing common prosperity to the entirety of surrounding rural areas in Keqiao. The “agricultural entrepreneur’s alliance” has inspired more than 200 university students to engage in agricultural entrepreneurship, produced more than 50 successful entrepreneurs, more than 1,000 new jobs, and more than 20 million yuan in sales for entrepreneurs and partnered farmers alike.

Green mountains and crystal waters as far as the eye can see… on the banks of the Ruoye River, under Rizhu-lined ridges, vibrant masterpieces of common prosperity unfurl as kaleidoscopic, painted scrolls - canvases that stretch far beyond fields of tea to entire expanses of magnificent rural landscapes beyond. Under the warm embrace of a new spring sun, eight friends from all four corners of the world converged on a village field in Keqiao - experiencing not just its innate, pastoral charm, but the foundations of common prosperity on which its soil now lies.
