At present, railway train arrival tickets, boarding and exit vouchers are printed paper tickets. After the electronic ticket replacement is implemented, the boarding and exit vouchers are the valid IDs held when applying for the replacement ticket. Passengers who need to be reimbursed can apply for a reimbursement certificate at the ticket vending machine or station ticket counter within 180 days from the date of boarding.

When the train or station staff goes through the ticket replacement procedure, the passenger's mobile phone number will be left. After the replacement of the ticket is completed, the passenger can immediately receive a 12306 SMS notification to learn the information of the replacement ticket. When passengers apply for a replacement ticket on a train or station, they should find a staff member to do so. On EMU trains that provide QR code services, passengers can also fill in and submit requests for replacement tickets or seat upgrades through the QR code applet by scanning the QR code on the armrest of the train seat. After receiving the requests submitted by passengers, the train staff will respond according to the on-site situation and train capacity. For special groups such as elderly passengers and off-line passengers, railway stations will continue to provide face-to-face services and support cash payment.

The railway department reminds passengers that when the passenger requests to cross the station to continue the ride before the ticket arrives at the station, the staff can apply for a replacement ticket if the train has the capacity. If the transportation capacity is insufficient, the train staff will stop issuing replacement tickets, and passengers are requested to board the train according to the section and seat of the purchased tickets.

The China Railway E-ticket service was launched on the Hainan Island Roundabout High-speed Railway in November 2018 and expanded to four high-speed intercity railways including the Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railway in July 2019. In April 2020, full coverage of e-ticket services was achieved on high-speed rail and intercity railways. In June 2020, the full coverage of the general-speed railway e-ticket service was achieved.

The promotion of e-tickets has experienced application tests in various periods, routes, regions and scenarios. The stable operation of the system, efficient business handling, well-organized process and good passenger experience have played a positive role in facilitating passenger travel and improving service quality.
