Two-day international symposium exploring the development of Chinese contemporary literature and art wraps up

On the morning of July 9, 2022, the international symposium on "the development of Chinese contemporary literature and art and the construction of literary theory discourse" and the 19th annual conference of China Association of Sino - Foreign Literary and Arts Theories (CASFLAT) were held aat the Zhejiang Hotel in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. this academic seminar was hosted by China Association of  Sino - Foreign Literary and Arts Theories, jointly organized by Department of Chinese Language and Literature, School of Humanities, Hangzhou Normal University; First-level Discipline of Art Theory, Hangzhou Normal University; and the "Literary and Art Criticism Research Institute", a key research base of philosophy and social sciences in Zhejiang Province.


Today, China is facing great changes unseen in a century. The purpose of this conference is to discover new situations, raise new questions, share new insights, and discuss new expressions, new directions, and new forms for the construction of literary and art theory discourse systems, so as to contribute to the development of literary and art theories in China.

The opening ceremony of the conference was presided over by Researcher Ding Guoqi, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Institute of Ethnic Literature, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Professor Zhang Jiang, former Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and former editor-in-chief of "Chinese Social Sciences" magazine, came to the conference to deliver a speech and made a keynote academic report, he shares his own perspective about how to develop China's own hermeneutic discourse. Professor Zhang Jiang emphasized that the basic construction of Chinese hermeneutics should start from traditional Chinese hermeneutic thoughts and experiences and settle in contemporary cultural practice. In addition, Professor Zhang Jiang also elaborated on several important issues in constructing the theory of "public interpretation" in contemporary China from the aspects of whether interpretation is a public or private behavior, how to define the definition and connotation of public interpretation, and what is the historical genealogy and theoretical basis.

Huang Zhaoxin, Vice President of Hangzhou Normal University, introduced the great achievements of the organizer in recent years in his welcome speech, and hoped that this grand event would promote the deepening and expansion of contemporary Chinese literary discourse research. Researcher Gao Jianping, president of the China Society for Chinese and Foreign Literature and Art Theory, reviewed the development of the China Society for Chinese and Foreign Literature and Art Theory and expressed his expectations for the young scholars attending the meeting. At the conference, Professor Jin Yuanpu read the "Tribute Letter to Mr. Qian Zhongwen's 90th Birthday".


After the opening ceremony, the academic report of the conference was given, which was held in two halves, presided over by Professor Gao Nan and Professor Zhang Zhengwen, commented by Professor Jin Yuanpu and Professor Tan Haozhe. In the first half, Professor Gao Jianping, Professor Du Wei, Professor Zhang Zhengwen, Professor Xu Ming, Professor Tan Haozhe, Professor Zhou Qichao and Professor Yao Wenfang expressed their views on issues such as the localization of literary theory, public interpretation, academic ethics, the sinicization of Marxist literary theory, and contemporary Russian comparative literature. In the second half, Professor Gao Nan, Professor Jin Yuanpu, Professor Zhao Yanqiu, Professor Zhang Jing, Professor Ding Guoqi, Professor Li Chunqing, and Professor Lu Yang expressed their own thoughts about the Chinese paradigm of literary theorists, the Metaverse, literary theory without literature, and Foucault's interpretation of "The Maids of Honor", etc.  


On the afternoon of the 10th, the academic report of the second conference was chaired by Professor Zhang Xian and Professor Su Hongbin. Wang Ning, Ouyang Youquan, Song Wei, Liu Fangxi, Zhu Zhirong, Su Hongbin, Xing Jianchang, Hong Jun, Liu Kang from Duke University , Xu Shuang from University of Paris -Cite ,  Damien Tomaselli from the University of Johannesburg expressed their views on issues such as digital humanities, network literary criticism, Marxist art theory, contemporary Chinese Marxist literary theory, interdisciplinary innovation and development, and the interpretation method of ideological resources of ancient Chinese literary theory.


The closing ceremony was presided over by Shan Xiaoxi from Hangzhou Normal University. Representatives of each sub-venue reported their speeches. Professor Hong Zhigang, Dean of the School of Humanities of Hangzhou Normal University, delivered a closing speech, and President Gao Jianping made an academic summary.


During the two-day conference, 8 offline sub-venues and 5 online sub-venues were held, they have carried out lively exchanges and discussions focusing on the creative transformation of traditional Chinese literary theory, the development and construction of contemporary Chinese literary theory, the practical application of Western literary and artistic theoretical resources, new media, AI, post-human beings, object turn, metaverse and literary innovation, literary aesthetics and other topics, nearly 300 scholars from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Hangzhou Normal University and other domestic and foreign scientific research institutions and universities attended the meeting.
