"On hearing the doctors and devices for my mother's surgery are from China, I feel reassured," said daughter of 82-year-old Turkish female Ferid Yazici, who was suffering from severe aortic valve stenosis and had undergone a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure at Kocaeli University Hospital in Türkiye on July 22 local time.

Different from previous operations the hospital has done before, this one was in collaboration with China’s domestically developed medical devices and proctored under Chinese expert team.

Wang Jian'an, renowned Chinese cardiologist from the Second Affiliated Hospital Zhejiang University School of Medicine, and his team, were invited to Türkiye, using China's domestically developed medical devices to proctor several transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures. It was the first of its kind performed in Türkiye and the operations were successful.

"Today, we worked together to use the fantastic device made in China. It is a device that has already served a lot of people in China and we hope it can serve Turkish patients as well. We have full confidence in Chinese manufacturing and are committed to delivering excellent results," said Wang, who had travelled 8,000 km and worked non-stop.

During the procedures, Professor Teoman Kilic, president of Turkish Working Group of Interventional Cardiology and cardiovascular intervention expert, performed the procedures with Wang's team.

As one of Türkiye's top medical institutions, Kocaeli University Hospital performs the highest volume of cardiac valve interventions nationwide, but such collaboration was brand new experience for Kilic.

"I want to thank Professor Wang and his team member Professor Liu Xianbao for their support during the implementation," said Kilic. "The two cases were very risky patients and everything went perfect. And we made it to self-expandable implementation. The result is good," he said, adding that the hospital will keep on using the Chinese device in helping more Turkish patients.

Apart from Kocaeli, Wang's team also proctored TAVR procedures in other Turkish regions including Izmir and Istanbul, all of which went on smoothly.

Wang's cardiac valve team has dedicated over a decade to establishing a comprehensive R&D and clinical application system for domestically produced medical devices covering all cardiac valves.

The team has successfully developed China's first retrievable transcatheter aortic valve with precise positioning capabilities, created a groundbreaking "Hangzhou solution" specifically addressing the prevalent characteristics of severe aortic valve calcification and high bicuspid valve deformity rates among Chinese patients and pioneered transfemoral edge-to-edge repair procedures for tricuspid valve diseases.

They have been invited to conduct on-site training at 18 top medical centers across 12 countries including Italy, Spain, Argentina, and Russia. For nine consecutive years, their surgeries using China's domestically developed medical devices have been live-streamed at premier international cardiology conferences.

"I think more and more Chinese medical techniques, devices and pharmaceuticals will go global, benefiting patients all around the world," said Wang.
