In Longyou county, Quzhou, Zhejiang province, Weng Xudong, manager of the Zhejiang Longyou Stream Fish Breeding Base in Huzhen town, was recently busy guiding two students from Africa — Gao Dan and Orest Akimana — on artificial breeding techniques for wild fish.

Gao, 25 from the Republic of Congo, and Akimana, 26 from Rwanda, are pursuing master's degrees in aquaculture at Zhejiang Ocean University and are in Longyou county for a 2-3 month internship.

Longyou, a key aquaculture hub in Zhejiang, has embraced technological innovation to forge a distinctive path in modern aquaculture. Gao said that he was glad to learn techniques at Zhejiang Longyou Stream Fish Breeding Base, noting the impressive recirculating aquaculture systems.

In the 10,000-square-meter modern aquaculture base, the students eagerly absorbed knowledge on breeding techniques and fish fry management. Akimana said he saw great potential in enhancing Rwanda's aquaculture industry. For his part, Gao said that he would start a company back home using the advanced methods.

Despite initial language barriers, the two students quickly adapted, impressing Weng with their dedication.

Moving forwards, plans are for more African students to follow in their footsteps, aiming to bring China's aquaculture expertise back to Africa. "Aquaculture technology is universal," Weng said.
