Antigua and Barbuda PM in Zhejiang: Prime Minister Gaston Browne visits Alibaba headquarters in Hangzhou

The prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, has wrapped up a 2-day visit to the city of Hangzhou in east China's Zhejiang Province. Wu Bin has the highlights. 


The prime minister's first stop on Thursday was at the headquarters of Alibaba Group. 


Founded in 1999, the online retail company has become a multinational tech giant comprising multiple businesses relevant to our everyday lives. 


Gaston Browne was introduced to the company's history and its technological advancements, including in cloud computing and artificial intelligence. 


During the visit, representatives of the country's health ministry signed an agreement with Alibaba's research institute, the Damo Academy, to strengthen medical cooperation using AI technology. 


Gaston Browne also visited Hangzhou Normal University.

Like we just signed the Memorandum of Understanding Alibaba to provide certain services as we seek to use digitalization to obtain competitive advantage. And I believe that and many of you here who have the type of innovativeness and the creativity as well as the entrepreneurship."


On Friday, Gaston Browne visited Zhejiang International Studies University. 


And was invited to take part in a traditional Chinese Spring Festival celebration. 


The University established a Confucius Institute in Antigua and Barbuda in 2019, aiming to boost cultural and people-to-people exchanges. 


It has signed an agreement with the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus on further cooperation, and launched a campaign to promote Chinese language education in the Caribbean. 


GASTON BROWNE Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda "We are now visiting a number of institutions, as you said, to universities, and we are establishing memorandums of understanding so that we will deepen our cooperation at the micro level. By so doing, this will result in greater people to people exchanges. I mean these are tangible ways, in which we strengthen the bilateral relationship between both our countries."


Gaston Browne also visited iMBIORAY, a biotechnology company in Hangzhou that specializes in cellular immunotherapy to treat tumors and immune diseases. 


He visited the company lab and met with the corporate executive to discuss future opportunities for cooperation. 


WU BIN Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province "Following his visit to Hangzhou, Prime Minister Gaston Brown is expected to travel to Shanghai on Friday, where he will stay until Sunday and visit multiple places exploring opportunities for cooperation in sectors including medicines, artificial intelligence, and new energy vehicles.
