China's Spring Festival consumption recovers in various industries, demonstrating the resilience of the country's economic development despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the 21st Century Business Herald.


Tourism industry

The number of domestic tourism trips during the 2023 Spring Festival holiday from Jan 21 to 27 was 308 million, up 23.1 percent year-on-year, recovering to 88.6 percent from the same period of 2019.


Domestic tourism revenue reached 375.84 billion yuan ($ 55.63 billion), up 30 percent year-on-year, recovering to 73.1 percent from the same period of 2019, the report said, citing the data centre of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

During the 2023 Spring Festival holiday, the box office witnessed a year-on-year growth of 11.89 percent to reach 6.76 billion yuan, ranking second in the history of China's Spring Festival box office.


During the same period of time, the number of moviegoers was 129 million, up 13.16 percent year-on-year, according to preliminary statistics from the State Film Administration.


Catering industry

During the Spring Festival holiday, the revenue of key catering companies surveyed increased by 24.7 percent compared with the Spring Festival period in 2022 and 1.9 percent compared with that in 2019.


The restaurant's footfall increased 26 percent compared to last year's Spring Festival and was roughly the same as that of 2019, according to a survey conducted by the China Cuisine Association.

Nine million passenger trips were made by civil aviation during the 2023 Spring Festival holiday, an increase of 79.8 percent over the same period in 2022, according to China Civil Aviation Administration.


In the same period, 50.174 million passenger trips were made by railways nationwide, with an average daily number of 7.168 million, an increase of 57.0 percent year-on-year, according to National Railway Administration.

About 410 million express packages were collected during the 2023 Spring Festival holiday, an increase of 5.1 percentage points over the 2022 Spring Festival holiday and 192.9 percentage points over the same period in 2019.


About 330 million packages were delivered by express delivery, up 10 percentage points year-on-year and 254.8 percentage points higher than in the same period in 2019, according to data from the State Post Bureau.

The sales revenue of consumption-related industries in the 2023 Spring Festival holiday increased by 12.2 percent compared with the previous Spring Festival holiday, and by 12.4 percent compared with the 2019 Spring Festival holiday, according to data from the State Administration of Taxation.
