The opening meeting of the fourth session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) started at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday, attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping and other state leaders.
Premier Li Keqiang delivered a government work report on behalf of the State Council to the legislature for deliberation.
In the report, Li said China was the world's only major economy to achieve growth in 2020 and has won a complete victory in the fight against poverty.
With China's GDP growth of 2.3 percent in 2020, a better-than-expected recovery was achieved, he noted.
In the past five years in China, over 60 million urban jobs have been added and the world's largest social security system has been established, Li said.
As the national legislature prepares to review the draft outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan (FYP), China has accomplished the major goals and tasks of the 13th FYP, the report affirmed.
The country has set its gross domestic product (GDP) growth target at above 6 percent for 2021, the premier said.
As the world is still battling the COVID-19 pandemic, China supports global cooperation on combating COVID-19 and calls for building a global health community. China has also made important contributions to advancing global peace and development, he added.
