Having attracted much attention, potential vaccines for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) made their debuts at the 2020 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS).

The inactivated COVID-19 vaccines on the show are developed by Chinese pharmaceutical companies: China National Biotec Group (CNBG) and SINOVAC.

For the time being, clinical trials of CNBG’s COVID-19 vaccines have entered the last phase in the UAE, Bahrain, Peru, Morocco, and Argentina. Around fifty thousand people in a number of countries have been involved. In the meantime, advanced biosecurity production facilities in the company’s research institutes in Beijing and Wuhan have been set up, which are expected to produce 300 million doses a year in total.

Another star exhibitor at CIFTIS, SINOVAC is testing its vaccine candidate CoronaVac in Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey, Bangladesh, and some other countries. CoronaVac is now also in Phase 3 clinical trials and has been included in the emergency scheme. The pace of research is fast in Brazil, said Yin Weidong, chief executive officer of Sinovac, and the vaccine will be offered to 9,000 volunteers as planned. Once it is proven effective overseas, it will be launched to the market. “We hope to get clinical results by the end of the year,” said Yin.

Will SINOVAC’s novel coronavirus vaccine be effective worldwide? In his reply, Yin said his company had obtained more than 20 SARS-Cov-2 virus strains with different sequences in countries and regions like the US, Europe, and the Middle East and that the vaccine immune serum can neutralize these viruses. Therefore, it can be presumed that the vaccine will be effective against different virus strains from around the world.

Apart from vaccines, anti-epidemic products like COVID-19 human immunoglobulin and nucleic acid detection kits are also being showcased at CIFTIS in Beijing.
