The 309 km Hefei - Huzhou section of China’s Shangqiu-Hefei-Hangzhou (Shanghehang) high-speed railway opened on June 28.

The section, which runs between Heifei, capital of Ansei province, and Huzhou, in Zhejiang province, has 13 stations. The section completes the 795km Shangqiu - Hangzhou (Shanghehang) high-speed line, following the opening of the northern section between Hefei and Shangqiu in December 2019.

On the morning of June 28, G9398, the first train of this line departed from Hangzhou East Railway Station to Hefei, the capital city of Anhui Province. The whole line of the Shanghehang railway finally opened to traffic after five years of construction, marking an addition to the high-speed rail channels from Zhejiang to other provinces.

Thanks to the opening of the Hefei-Huzhou section, Anji, in Huzhou, which was not connected to the railway, officially joined the high-speed railway line with the highest design speed of 350 kilometers per hour in China. The original traveling time more than one hour by bus between Anji and Hangzhou is now shortened to half an hour by the high-speed rail.

According to Liu Xiaojiang, the manager on duty of Hangzhou Railway Station, there is a transition period for the operation of the Hefei-Huzhou section of Shangqiu-Hefei-Hangzhou High-speed Railway from June 28 to June 30 when 8 pairs of trains run every day. After July 1, however, the daily line, weekend line, and peak line will be arranged normally with the maximum number of trains to run every day up to 60.5 pairs.

The significance of the opening of the whole line of Shangqiu-Hefei-Hangzhou High-speed Railway lies in that it strengthens the connection between the high-speed railway network in the Yangtze River Delta and that in the Central Plains. The direct route from Hangzhou to the Central Plains is now available, and the number of trains can be greatly increased so that the more train tickets are reachable.

It is understood that 2 hours and 7 minutes may allow people to travel from southern Hefei to eastern Hangzhou if take the route of the Hefei-Huzhou section.

Industry insiders pointed out that the high-speed railway network in the central and eastern regions of China will be further improved after the opening of the Hefei-Huzhou section of Shangqiu-Hefei-Hangzhou High-speed Railway, thus effectively relieves the passenger flow pressure of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway. It is a convenience for people along the line, and a driving force for the development of the central region and the integration of the Yangtze River Delta region.
