1. Schools in South Africa reopened, but parents are not allowed to enter in

The Isipho primary school in Soweto welcomed seventh-grade students on June 8 after nearly three months of non-contact learning. One student's mother said she was still nervous, especially that parents were not allowed to enter the school.

On Monday morning, the ban on visitors to the school caused many parents' dissatisfaction. They wanted to know what measures the school had taken to protect their children, but they were not allowed to enter the school.

2. Two major disaster areas in South Africa have witnessed COVID-19 cases on campus

Western Cape said 55 schools in the province were affected by the COVID-19 case, while 30 schools in Howden reported cases.

11 schools in Western Cape closed on June 5 due to COVID-19, but they were expected to resume school June 8.

WCED, which runs 1,509 schools across the province, confirmed the news on June 8.

3. The World Bank forecasts that South Africa's economy will decline by 7.1% this year

South Africa's economic activity is expected to contract by 7.1% this year, the worst contraction in a century, down 8% from the previous forecast. The strict but necessary national epidemic prevention measures, including the extension of the national blockade, have seriously disrupted economic activity.

Economic growth is expected to rebound in 2021, thanks in part to the government's announced fiscal stimulus package accounting for 10% of GDP, which aims to mitigate the impact of the epidemic and lay the foundation for a strong recovery.

4. President Ramafusha: if necessary, parts of South Africa should increase the level of blockade

South Africa's president, Ramafusha gave an address about the rise in the number of reported cases and deaths of Covid-19 in South Africa.

"Yesterday, June 8, 2020, was a solemn milestone in our fight against the Covid-19, with more than 1,000 people dying of the disease among our compatriots, reaching 1,080."

Ramafusha said this may reintroduce higher levels of the blockade in some parts of the country to help stop the rapid spread of the epidemic.

5. The flow of customers in South Africa's shopping centers is down by 71%, but consumers are slowly coming back

Customer flow in some of South Africa's major shopping centers is slowly returning to the pre-blockade level, but not all stores are open.

Hyprop Investments, the owners of Hyde Park Corner, Canal Walk, and Rosebank Mall explained in a business update on Wednesday (June 10) that the impact of the COVID-19 on the retail sector and the resulting trading restrictions were very severe.

Under the level III (effective from June 1, 2020) blockade, all tenants are allowed to operate except for cinema, entertainment, and personal care rentals.

6. The backlog of Covid-19 detection in South Africa is slowly reducing with Gauteng Province having the most accumulation

首席执行官Kamy Chetty博士在周三(6月10日)向议会提交的报告中说,目前积压的未检测病毒样本大约有63000个。这些积压样本的定义为在实验室首次登记后超过三天的未测试的标本。

In a report to parliament on Wednesday (10 June), chief executive Dr. kamy Chetty said there was a backlog of about 63,000 undetected virus samples. These backlogs were defined as untested specimens more than three days after the first registration of the laboratory.

她补充说,在减少6月初积压的8万份样本方面,国家计生委正在稳步推进。

She added that the State Family Planning Commission was steadily moving forward in reducing the backlog of 80,000 samples in early June.

在查看省级积压的数据时,目前积压最多的是豪登省(23,000个),其次是东开普省(21,953个)。

When looking at the data backlog at the provincial level, the province with the largest backlog is Howden (23,000), followed by Eastern Cape (21,953).

7. Fifteen schools in Western Cape closed after reporting cases of COVID-19

"Since the outbreak, 98 teachers have been infected, but these infections occurred before school reopening," Brian Schrouder, the province's education minister, said at an earlier press conference.

In the first week of school, more than 60 staff and 2 students from 55 schools tested positive for COVID-19, the Department said.

15 schools in Western Cape had to be closed after positive cases of COVID-19 occurred among staff and students.
