Angie motshekga, South Africa's Ministry of Basic Education, has confirmed that students will return to school on June 8, next week.


The minister also apologized to the South African public who had been confused for days about reopening schools.


According to a joint survey conducted by the  South African Democratic Teachers' Union, no more than 55% of principals said that the school was ready to open on Monday (June 1) to resume teaching and learning.

3. Labor Department: only 55% of enterprises comply with COVID-19 safety regulations


On Tuesday, June 2, South African time, the labor department said it was concerned that only 55% of South African enterprises had complied with health and safety regulations designed to protect workers from the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic.


The Department has sent inspectors to visit companies and factories to ensure that enterprises implement social distance and hygiene measures in all aspects.


4. The High Court of South Africa ruled that COVID-19 patients could not insist on the national isolation


Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has ordered that any patient who is positive in the COVID-19 test cannot ask for isolation in a state institution if they are capable of isolating themselves at home.


The order was issued on Wednesday, June 3, following an urgent application from the AfriForum. The forum questioned the legality of the prohibition of self-isolation.


"These Provisions are considered by the AfriForum as severe and unreasonable, with the aim of forcibly isolating all of those who have tested positive for COVID-19," the forum said in a statement.



5. Live by usury! The food shortage in South Africa is aggravated for the epidemic blockade


According to the latest weekly survey of Ask Africa, the economic security level of respondents is quite low. 36% of respondents have no financial source, and 40% of respondents have arranged future repayment. Others have canceled programs such as insurance to save money.


Due to the food shortage, people reduce the amount of food and seek help from friends, in some cases, even from usury.

6. The cases of COVID-19 infection soared this week in Howden Province


On Friday, June 5, South African time, David Markula, the governor of Howden Province, said the province had recorded the largest increase of COVID-19 infection in the past seven days.


Presently, there are 4,839 positive cases in the province.


In the past week, six new deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported in the Howden area, bringing the total number of deaths to 37.



7. South Africa can't afford a massive outbreak in another province at the same time


Deputy Minister of Health, Joe Pahera, maintained that the country could not afford another province falling into the situation of heavy COVID-19 epidemic similar to that in Western Cape.


The province accounts for at least 60% of the country's more than 40,000 confirmed COVID-19 patients.


In recent days, the country's death toll has risen sharply, with more than 76% of the dead coming from Western Cape.
