A few days ago, an original short film named The Son of the Star has emerged on the international stage. This short film has been successively shortlisted in a series of nominations and awards: the competition unit of Seoul International Children's Film Festival, the First-Time Filmmaker Sessions of The Lift-Off Sessions, the special recommendation of Southeast Asia Short Film Festival, the film competition unit of Critica Art Festival, and won the highest honor of London X4 Spring Short Film Festival, the Rome Independent Film Award, the Best Photography Award of Eurasia International Film Festival.

The Son of the Star is directed by Chen Yang, a student from the School of Art and Design in Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, and supervised by Zheng Wei, a teacher in the Department of Digital Media Art. This is the second time for the school's teachers and students to win the international film award after Gu Xiaogang, a graduate of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University and a young Chinese director has been shortlisted for Cannes Film Festival 2019.

The Son of the Star tells a story about the autistic children

The Son of the Star tells the story of the autistic child Star and his grandfather.

Short as it is for only 12 minutes, the film required months of hard work from Chen Yang and his team.

In July 2019, Chen Yang began to write the script of The Son of the Star. Only after Chen Yang consulted a large number of researches and materials on autism, consulted people with relevant information, and had an insight into the behaviors of autism people, can he express his attitude and understanding towards autism groups by the script in August.

In fact, the short film, which won many honors and awards later, was almost abandoned by Chen Yang at the beginning. After three months of practice, he finally picked up confidence and decided to complete The Son of the Star.

Polished back and forth for more than one month, the 12-minute film ultimately embraced its accomplishment in December 2019.

Persist only for love

Chen Yang started his major in Digital Media of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University from 2016. As early as his freshman year, Chen has clearly determined his further study field - Film and Television.

In his freshman year, Chen took part in some school plays. Later in the sophomore year, attracted by photography, he hunted around actively with a camera, shooting for everything fascinating. Then in his junior year, he was crowned as the president of the school's Deep Sea Film Club.

Meanwhile, professional courses also made a significant effect on Chen's understanding of films.

With great enthusiasm, Chen never spares effort in shooting and editing.

Always be grateful while pursuing dreams

Maybe it's his pure pursuit for films that touches people around, many of them offering a helping hand on his way to the dream. Graduates of the school stay in touch with Chen and are willing to make a contribution.

Chen Yang constantly refines himself on his chasing after films. At the current stage, he still intends to pay more attention to the warmth and beauty of life from the perspective of "love", and expect for more awards to prove himself and give back to the school.
