Wang Chaonan is Assistant to Head Nurse of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Lishui Municipal Central Hospital, Vice Secretary of the hospital’s Communist Youth League, and leader of the first medical team from Lishui Municipal Central Hospital dispatched by the Zhejiang provincial government to support Wuhan.

In Wuhan, I was moved and motivated every day

Upon their arrival in Wuhan on 25th January, Wang Chaonan and her colleagues have stationed inward area on the 20th floor of Wuhan No.4 Hospital. On the third day after her arrival, she accepted the overall takeover of that ward area with another 32 colleagues from the Zhejiang provincial medical team. They mainly admitted and treated severe COVID-19 patients. She was moved and motivated every day when she was in Wuhan.

In early February, an old woman was ever critically ill in her department. “At that time, I could even feel her short of breath even if I wore heavy protective clothing,” Wang Chaonan said. However, every time after her injection, drug distribution and nursing, the old woman always said thank you to her by striving to cross her hands. Wang Chaonan said, “She even stammered in saying thank you to me, but I was shocked and touched a lot. She was expressing her gratitude even at the cost of her life. From her, I’ve felt how tough life is once again.”

Some other time, she helped a patient find an extremely fine vein. After the injection, the patient insisted on giving her an orange. “Although I couldn’t eat, I could feel that they were expressing their heartfelt gratitude to us.” Later, the patient insisted upon taking a joint photo with the medical workers at the time of discharge.

The protective supplies worn by medical workers were donated from different areas, so the protective supplies they wore every day were different. She said happily, “My style differs every day.”

My mother won in her fight with monsters in Wuhan

Since “she left without saying goodbye” on 25th January, Wang Chaonan was hiding her desire for meeting her son deep in her heart. “I told my son that I had gone to fight monsters. My daughter is a little older. I told her that I went to work in a Wuhan hospital, and there were many patients I had to look after. My daughter asked me to pay extra attention to safety.”

Afterward, Wang Chaonan couldn’t make phone calls to her family often due to frequent work in three shifts. “My mother said that my daughter fell asleep after crying every night. One day when I made a video call to my family, my son was beside, but he was reluctant to see me. For a swift moment, I saw him crying.”

Before her return to Lishui, she bought gifts for her two kids respectively.

In addition, Wang Chaonan said that her past experiences in Wuhan deepened her understanding of the profession as a nurse.
