"Thanks to our exceptionally excellent team, we have helped each other and overcome numerous difficulties!” On April 8, Zou Xiaoyue, head nurse of the First People’s Hospital of Chaozhou, who was revising the feasibility report of nursing research at home and had just finished her self-quarantine, told the reporter.

Recalling her 54 days in Wuhan, Zou was deeply moved. She remembered that she boarded a train from Hangzhou to Wuhan on the evening of January 27.

The Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital, where Zou worked in Wuhan, is one of the earliest designated hospitals in Wuhan to receive and treat patients suffering COVID-19. "Most patients here are treated with tracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, and severely ill patients are treated with ECMO and CRRT," Zou said that she was desperate to work in the ward to relieve patients of their suffering.

On January 31, after completing rigorous training and assessment, the medical team began to work. Zou worked the first night shift in Ward No.1 for patients with critical condition. “After putting on protective clothing, I can only move slowly and it is quite tiring. After the first shift was over, all of our clothes and goggles were soaked." Zou said.

Meticulously and patiently, Zou treated and took good care of patients with a critical condition, assisted doctors with sputum aspiration under bronchoscope, helped patients breathe in the prone position, conducted sputum aspiration with tracheal tubes, and dumped condensate water in ventilators. Every step would put her at risk, but she did not cower back. Instead, she always worked at the frontline of the fight against the epidemic.

As a respiratory therapist, Zou often had in-depth discussions and shared her years of research and practical experience with the nursing team at Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital in her spare time. Their WeChat discussion often lasted until midnight.

Zou is like an elder sister to her team members. Every time before they entered the ward, Zou would encourage them. In daily work, Zou would help them solve all kinds of problems. Even after work, Zou often cared about them.

In early March, Zou won the honorary title of "Advanced Individual of National Health System in COVID-19 Prevention and Control", and her medical team, Zhejiang Critical Care Support Team, won the honorary title of "Advanced Group of National Health System in COVID-19 Prevention and Control".

“这里的病患大多使用气管插管、机械通气治疗,严重的还使用了ECMO(体外膜肺氧合技术)和CRRT(连续性血液净化治疗)。”
