Shanghai's Fudan University has chosen to use Kaihua paper for this year's admission letters.
Known as the "jewel on the crown of Chinese traditional handmade paper", Kaihua paper, from Kaihua county in Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, is recognized for being delicate, white, and resilient.
This year's admission letters include a security watermark of the Fudan University logo, demonstrating Kaihua paper's capabilities in high-end anti-counterfeiting and personalized customization.
Huang Hongjian, director of the Kaihua Paper Traditional Techniques Research Center, highlighted the technical challenges and innovations in incorporating the watermark logo.
Over a meticulous three-year process, Huang collaborated with experts nationwide to successfully combine modern technologies like 3D printing and laser engraving with the 72 traditional handmade processes of Kaihua paper. This effort resulted in a seamless integration of watermark technology with the essence of Chinese long-fiber handmade paper.
This development not only enhances the authenticity of Fudan University's admission letters but also broadens the applications of Kaihua paper, paving the way for personalized customization in high-end art, cultural creations, and significant certificates.
The revival of Kaihua paper, from near obscurity to its current prominent use, illustrates the successful integration of traditional craftsmanship with modern technology.
