Ou embroidery, produced in Oujiang Region, is a traditional art of Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province.  As a famous embroidery exported by China, it is not only treasured by the nation, but also given as a national gift. It originated from the Tang Dynasty and reached its heyday in the Ming and the Qing Dynasty. In the Song and the Yuan Dynasty, embroideries on shoes, hats and clothes were popular among the folks of Wenzhou, and the technique was consummate.


Ou embroidery enjoys a great variety including ornaments such as printed pictures and hanging screens, and general consumables like tablecloth, stage costumes, pillowcases and quilt cover. There are four categories of patterns, namely, figures, landscapes, flowers and beasts, and more than 1,000 designs. The most prominent feature of Ou embroidery is diversified stitching methods of more than 20 kinds, including even stitch, broken stitch and roller stitch. In addition, it is characterized by a mixture of colored threads of different textures, thickness and lusters. It has “salient topic, bright colors, refined composition, delicate stitching, as well as clear texture”, showing a distinctive decorativeness and local style.


In 2001, Ou embroidery made onto the list of Key Arts under the Protection of Zhejiang Province. In 2008, it was present on the list of national intangible cultural heritages.
